Perm. Sec. Charges NESREA on Revenue Generation
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote was at the headquarters of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA on an official visit.
Mrs. Odusote was accompanied by the Director, Human Resources, Dr. (Mrs.) Bolatito Obisesan and support staff from the Ministry.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary tasked the management of the Agency to seek ways of increasing its internally generated revenue. This she said must be in such a way that the integrity of the environment is not compromised “I would want you to brainstorm and find creative ways of generating income,’ she said.
Mrs. Odusote also commended NESREA for its efforts in protecting the environment.
Earlier, the Acting Director General of NESREA, Mrs. Miranda Amachree highlighted some of the achievements by the Agency. She told the Permanent Secretary that NESREA is implementing programmes for the control of environmental degradation such as the Extended Producer Responsibility, the National Vehicular Emission Control and the National Generator Emission Control Programmes.
The Acting DG also said NESREA, through collaboration with state governments now has 4 additional state offices in Ogun, Adamawa, Abia and Taraba States. While the Taraba State offices has taken off, the others are yet to be commissioned.
Mrs. Amachree disclosed that NESREA was working with national and international partners to achieve her mandate and had won landmark cases at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal bothering on Environmental Impact Assessment.
She mentioned some of the challenges facing the Agency to include delay of environmental crimes cases in courts, poor remuneration of staff and poor budgetary funding.
