Official flag-off of the National Generator Emission Control Programme, NGECP and the National Vehicular Emission Control Programme, NVECP by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Barrister Mohammed H. Abdullahi.

The NGECP and the NVECP are strategies aimed at reducing the emission of pollutants from generators (stationary source) and vehicles (mobile source). Both programmes would be implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and will involve periodic (annual) testing of generators and vehicles for toxic emissions.

In this strategy, the responsibility of NESREA will be to set national emission standards and to develop a reliable national database management system for all emissions data generated from the two programmes (NVECP, and NGECP) in Nigeria.
The implementation of the NGECP would begin with power generating sets of capacity from 10 kva and above, while for NVECP the lowest limit would be the Euro III emission standard as agreed at the ECOWAS regional level.

Objectives of the Programmes include creating public awareness of indiscriminate use of ill-maintained generators and vehicles and their environmental and health implications; supporting the implementation of the relevant National Environmental Regulations; and generating data on vehicular emission as well as generator emission for Nigeria.

The Programmes are also aimed at supporting the implementation of the Federal Government’s strategy for the reduction of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP); supporting the fulfilment of Nigerian’s commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement and the ECOWAS standards on emissions; improving the Nigerian air quality as well as creating jobs.
