NESREA Commends AIT, Says Media Is Key To Environmental Protection

Daar Communications Plc, owners of African Independent Television (AIT), have received commendation from the Director-General/CEO NESREA, Dr Lawrence Anukam, who declared that the media has a huge role to play in meeting the demands of effective public enlightenment and sensitization in the cause of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Dr. Anukam stated this recently when he was hosted by the Management of the outfit at their studios in Abuja. He solicited for stronger cooperation, increased partnership and more coverage by on their channels in keeping environmental issues on the front burner. The Director-General disclosed that this was necessary for the success of environmental compliance monitoring and enforcement activities in Nigeria.

Dr. Anukam pointed out that environmental TV and radio programmes could positively impact on the society through public enlightenment and sensitization that reach the grassroots, stating that “for this reason, the media is key and has a huge role to play”.

Mr. Tony Akiotu, Group Managing Director of Daar Communications Plc, commended NESREA for the excellent job it was doing in ensuring that the regulated community complies with environmental laws and regulations. He also commended NESREA for its efforts in tackling the problem of e-waste by ensuring that manufacturers and dealers in electrical and electronic equipment were adequately enlightened and by requiring them to key into the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme.
